We welcome books and zines by NYC writers and artists on NYC culture. Please bring in a small quantity in person any day 1pm to 1am for consideration.
ART SHOWS: Village Works promotes a specific contemporary cultural continuum reflecting NYC culture through a downtown lens. We Welcome Proposals collaborative in nature that document A SPECIFIC ERA, Past or present or GENRE of downtown culture. We don’t accept proposals from individual artists. Artists included in any proposal must be a resident of New York City, either born here or having lived here for at least 25 years. This requirement is not meant to exclude, but to support NYC raised artists and artists that developed here. We include and welcome newly arrived New Yorkers within our mission in other ways, learning from their experiences, while they take in the cultural history of this city and what evolution they are adding to.
~ We acknowledge the Lenape and all indigenous people for the current temporary use of their land to create on and to sustain our lives. We expect those aligned with us to share this appreciation to all people that have been replaced, exploited or uprooted in the history of this city.
~Village Works has a specific fondness to the Warholian/Basquiat/Haring lineage, as an example of modern mentoring, where multi-generational artists learned from each other and understood the importance of “passing the torch” to the new generation. We embrace the Warholian thought that art should evolve to be more diverse, equal and community focused. we are foremost a community space, unconcerned about the business of the art world around us.
